History of Our School
Hilmarton Primary School was founded by Thomas Poynder
in 1851 and as such is one of the oldest schools in the
county. By 1857 the school was managed by the local
Vicar and two school mistresses and had two good sized
classrooms. By 1900 there were 31 infants and 95 older
boys and girls attending. The school became County
Council property in 1914 and after a drop in admissions,
numbers have risen steadily again in recent years to the
current total.
Our Building
We are very proud of our attractive school building with
its Victorian bell tower. The original building has
since been extended; in the 1900s an additional
classroom was added which has now been developed as an
ICT Suite, and recently another classroom, cloakroom and
Headteacher’s office were successfully built thanks to a
huge fundraising project involving the whole village.
Plans are now well underway to build a hall for use by
the school and local community. One class is housed in a
mobile classroom and there is an additional mobile which
is used for group work, musical instrument tuition and
our after-school club “Whizbam.”
