I am pleased to
inform you that Hilmarton Primary School has
formally linked up with a small rural school just
outside Kalimpong in India. The JN Memorial School
in spite of its name is a small private school in a
village (a ‘busti’ in Nepali) with wonderful views
over the paddy fields. The school has about 50
pupils and 3 teachers. The school building is
basic! There are four classrooms within the
building, partitioned off, so there is plenty of
noise! The pupils are eager, friendly and the
standard of English is good and they follow an
English curriculum.
This is a wonderful and exciting opportunity for our
children to share and gain understanding about the
lives of children and their families living in a
completely different culture. The teachers and
pupils at the JN Memorial school are extremely
excited about linking up with our school and they
too hope to share and gain from learning about our
different experiences and cultures.
The children are from poor families and many rely
on sponsorship to fund their schooling. As you can
imagine school supplies, (even the most basic, like
exercise books and pencils) are in short supply and
books limited.
This
is not a request for donations;
however there are other very simple ways we can
help:
-
Do you have any unwanted reading books
(traditional and small in size, i.e. Ladybird
books), pencils/colouring pencils or stationery
items.
-
Old school uniform items (grey) or shoes (Gym
shoes); don’t worry if they look a little worn
as they will be better than what they have.
There will be a box in the IT room the last week of
term for any items you could pass on to our friends
in India.
Some of our children in class 3 / 4 have already
taken the time to write to the children, however if
any other children would like to write (over the
holidays), then please get in touch with Alison
Stephens for further details – 01249 760476
